Leadership Coaching Courses: How to Train as a Leadership Coach
Leadership coaching courses fall into three groups, and the right one depends on whether you want to coach leaders, lead like a coach, or build coaching across an organisation. Choosing the wrong group costs months, because a course for managers learning coaching skills does not prepare you to coach a chief executive, and a course for professional coaches assumes training you have not yet done.
Leadership coaching courses train coaches to work with leaders, or train leaders and managers to use coaching in how they lead. For coaches, the route is an accredited practitioner programme followed by advanced training in coaching senior leaders. Leaders and managers usually start with a short foundation course in coaching skills.
This guide is a spoke of TPC Coaching Academy's guide to what leadership coaching is. It compares the routes, sets out what leadership coach training covers, and lists what to look for before you book.
Which leadership coaching course is right for you?
Start with who you are and what you want to do with coaching. The table matches each starting point to one course.
| You are | Start with | Length and format |
|---|---|---|
| A manager or leader who wants to coach their team | Fundamentals of Coaching | Three days. EMCC EQA Foundation accredited. |
| Someone building a professional coaching practice | Coach Practitioner | Four modules over about seven months, delivered virtually on set dates. ICF and EMCC accredited. |
| A practitioner-level coach moving into senior leaders | Coaching Senior Leaders | Two days, online. Advanced level, requiring a practitioner-level programme first. |
| An organisation building coaching capability | Corporate and group bookings | Arranged with the team around your leaders. |
What does leadership coach training cover?
Leadership coach training builds two things: core coaching competence, then the presence to use it with senior people. You learn the models, practise them in real coaching conversations, and leave with the confidence to use them with leaders.
TPC Leadership has 30 years of experience coaching senior leaders across global organisations, and the advanced pathway draws on it directly. For a realistic timeline from first course to credential, read how long it takes to become a qualified coach.
What should you look for in a leadership coaching course?
Check four things before you book leadership coach courses of any kind.
- Accreditation. Programmes accredited by the ICF or EMCC have been independently assessed against defined standards.
- Supervised practice. Coaching is learned by doing, so look for real coaching sessions with feedback, not content delivery alone.
- Tutors who coach leaders. Ask who teaches the course and which leaders they work with.
- A clear prerequisite. Advanced courses assume earlier training, so check what a course expects before you book.
Which leadership and coaching courses suit managers?
Leader coach training for managers starts with Fundamentals of Coaching, a three-day foundation course counting as Module 1 of the full Coach Practitioner qualification. It builds the questioning and listening skills a coaching manager uses every week. Read the guide to the manager as coach for the skills in full.
If you already hold a practitioner-level qualification, the Coaching Senior Leaders pathway is the next step toward coaching leaders at the top of organisations.
